How to Refill a Candle Jar: 5-Minute Guide to Candle Wax Refills

That beautiful jar on your shelf doesn't have to be a one-candle story. With pearled wax refills, refreshing a candle takes about five minutes — no pouring, no melting, no mess.

This is the exact process we recommend for AbodeAura pearls, and it works for any refillable candle setup.

What you need

• A clean, heat-safe vessel (your old candle jar works great)
• Candle wax pearls — enough for 5–8 cm of depth
• Cotton candle wicks with metal base tabs
• A wick holder or chopstick (optional, for centering)

Step 1: Clean out the old jar

If you are reusing a jar from a finished candle, get the old wax and wick out first:

1. 1.Pour hot (not boiling) water into the jar, leaving an inch at the top.
2. 2.Let it sit 10–15 minutes; the leftover wax floats up and hardens on the surface.
3. 3.Pop off the wax disc, peel out the old wick base, and wash the jar with soap and water.

Dry the jar completely — water and wax pearls do not mix.

Step 2: Pour in the pearls

Fill the vessel to 5–8 cm deep. Two rules of thumb:

• Depth drives burn time: deeper pearls mean a longer-lasting candle and a more stable melt pool.
• Level surface matters: give the jar a gentle shake or tap so the pearls settle evenly.

One of the quiet joys of the format: you can pour two scents side by side in one wide vessel and create your own blend boundary.

Step 3: Place the wick

Press a cotton wick with a metal base tab into the pearls so only about 6 mm of wick stands above the surface. The pearls grip the tab — no glue, no centering device needed.

Positioning tips:

• Center the wick for an even pool in round vessels.
• For wide vessels (10 cm+), use two wicks spaced evenly instead of one oversized wick.

Step 4: First burn — set the memory

Light it and let the first burn run long enough for the melt pool to spread to about 5 cm across (usually 1–2 hours). This "sets the memory" for even burns afterward.

Step 5: Maintain like a pro

• Trim to 6 mm before every burn. This is the single biggest factor in a clean, soot-free flame.
• Cool before moving. Let the pool harden so the pearls stay layered.
• Refresh the top layer. After many burns, if the surface pearls look darkened, just scoop and flip the top layer — the fresh pearls below are untouched.

When to fully swap the wax

The pearls themselves don't expire quickly, but swap them when:

• You want a new scent
• The wax has burned down to 2 cm or less
• The pearls have collected dust from a long storage

To swap: extinguish, let cool, pull out the wick, and pour the old pearls into a storage bag. Pour in the new scent, add a fresh wick, done. (Pro tip: old unscented pearls still make great fire-starters or drawer fresheners depending on the wax type.)

Common refill mistakes to avoid

1. 1.Too few pearls. Under 3 cm deep, the wick base can wiggle loose and the pool reaches the glass too fast.
2. 2.Wet vessel. Water droplets cause sputtering. Dry thoroughly.
3. 3.Oversized wick. Bigger is not better — it soots. Match wick to diameter.
4. 4.Mixing old wax into new scent. Residual pearls will carry their old fragrance; do a clean swap instead.
